Position Summary
Ohio Valley Waste (Warren) is looking for a Commercial & Transfer Station Supervisor to help manage the commercial and industrial lines of business including the daily operations of a waste transfer station, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant handling, transfer, and disposal of municipal solid waste, recyclables, and other approved materials. The supervisor manages personnel, equipment, customer service, regulatory compliance, and site maintenance while promoting safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management
· Schedule & supervise daily commercial and industrial routes
· Supervise daily transfer station activities and workflows.
· Coordinate the receipt, inspection, processing, and transfer of waste materials.
· Monitor waste volumes and operational performance.
· Ensure proper loading, transportation, and disposal procedures are followed.
· Maintain efficient traffic flow and customer access throughout the facility.
Staff Supervision
· Direct, schedule, and supervise route drivers, transfer station operators, laborers, and other staff.
· Conduct employee training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
· Enforce company policies, safety procedures, and work standards.
· Assist with hiring, onboarding, and disciplinary actions as needed.
Safety and Compliance
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
· Conduct regular safety inspections and site audits.
· Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses.
· Implement corrective actions to reduce workplace hazards.
· Maintain required permits, certifications, and operational records.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
· Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs for heavy equipment and facility infrastructure.
· Inspect equipment regularly to ensure safe operation.
· Monitor inventory of supplies, fuel, and operational materials.
· Maintain cleanliness and appearance of the transfer station.
Customer Service
· Address customer inquiries, complaints, and service issues.
· Ensure professional interactions with residents, contractors, and commercial customers.
· Enforce site rules regarding acceptable waste and recycling materials.
Administrative Duties
· Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
· Track waste tonnage, equipment usage, and labor hours.
· Maintain regulatory documentation and compliance records.
· Assist in budget preparation and expense monitoring.
Qualifications
Education
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Associate degree in environmental science, business management, public administration, or related field preferred.
Experience
· 3–5 years of experience in solid waste, recycling, transfer station, landfill, or related operations.
· Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
· Experience operating heavy equipment is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Knowledge of solid waste management practices and environmental regulations.
· Understanding of occupational safety standards and procedures.
· Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
· Proficiency with computer systems, reporting software, and Microsoft Office applications.
· Ability to interpret operational reports and regulatory requirements.
Licenses and Certifications
· Valid driver's license required.
· OSHA, SWANA, or other industry certifications preferred.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Ability to walk, stand, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
· Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, traffic, and waste materials.
· May require occasional weekend, holiday, or emergency response work.
Work Environment
· Combination of office and outdoor operational settings.
· Exposure to dust, noise, odors, and moving machinery.
· Requires adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements at all times.
